Polydeck Resins Limited, a national resin flooring contractor, was awarded a project by principal contractor Pexhurst to refurbish the flooring at a unit in Grays Essex, previously used by Unilever.
The building is known as the Chill Box and is the largest chilled storage unit in the South of England. The walls are fully insulated Polystyrene panels with high kerbs and a power float concrete slab. The works were conducted over a three month period in 2020 by an experienced preparation and coatings team.
Prior to our commencement on site to the 16,500m2 building a substantial amount of high bay racking was demolished and removed leaving upwards of 20,000 bolts still in the floor and substantial amount of mechanical damage to the concrete. Each individual bolt had to be cut off and punched down below the surface prior to repairing with epoxy resin mortars and grouts.
Once the repairs cured in the low temperatures present, they were diamond ground by hand smooth ready for the floor preparation. The floor was generally shot blasted and edge diamond ground to provide a key to the concrete. Some 1,600m2 was prepared per day which once completed, had to be vacuumed to remove any dust residues present.
The resin coating application consisted of applying two coats of a Light Grey high build epoxy resin floor coating to provide a hard wearing finish throughout the building for the incoming tenant.
The new tenant, Gousto, are currently fitting out the building ready for use later this year to bring us all food to our door.
